HILO — Hawaii County is moving toward selecting a new county clerk.

New County Council Chairman J Yoshimoto has signed a resolution appointing Stewart Maeda as county clerk.

Maeda would replace Jamae Kawauchi if his appointment is confirmed by County Council members.

Kawauchi was in charge of the county’s elections during the primary election in August when 13 out of 40 polling places opened late.

Two polling places opened at least an hour behind schedule.

County Council members will vote on Maeda’s nomination after they are sworn in on Dec. 3.

Maeda is a long-time employee of the state Department of Human Services.
